This year’s T Shirt design is again inspired by 58 Ships – our collaborative public history project involving Harwich Museum, the Harwich Society and Harwich International Shanty Festival. The project was inspired by the board just by the entrance to the Navyard in Kings Quay Street, which displays the names of fifty-eight ships built there for the Royal Navy (and latterly, it turns out, the Royal Mail), beginning with the first HMS Harwich in 1660.
The ship on the T Shirt is an artists impression of HMS Falcon – a ‘snow-rigged’ sloop built at Harwich in 1744. The initial drawing is by our resident artist, Len Smith, and the overall graphic design is by Maderine Verrier. As with many of the Harwich ships, there are no known images of HMS Falcon, but we know she was a Merlin-class sloop, twenty of which
were built at various shipyards around the country: Falcon was the only example built in Harwich. If you want to know more about Falcon and her exciting career, come along to our 58 Ships event, on Saturday 11th at 1400 in Harwich Museum.
